BY: ROB McCURDY (News Journal) — I airballed on Jared Sullinger. I saw the Ohio State freshman phenom play several times in his high school career at Columbus Northland. I figured him to be a solid post player and contributor, but never an impact player on the college court, certainly not a big-time double-double guy capable of 40-point games.
know it’s hard to believe, but the defending prep picks world champion and winner of three of the last five titles doesn’t always get it right.
Maybe it’s the Christmas spirit in me and maybe it’s a last desperate attempt to get on Santa’s good side, but today’s about coming clean.
I’m going to do what sports writers — and certainly sports commentators hate to do — and that’s admit my flubs from over the years.
I thought LeBron James was going to be a Cavalier for life. They seemed close to a championship; they could offer lots more money; and he was a northeast Ohio guy who understood the city’s long history of sporting heartache and wanted to be the one who fixed it.
I was wrong.
I thought the Bron-less Cavs with a coach who had a clue about offensive basketball could win 35 and maybe 40 games. I also never thought they’d lie down like they did when they faced James for the first time in Cleveland.
Wrong and wrong.
